Why we're building Hughie

Hughie started with my brother.

He graduated from college in 2023 and was looking for a job. Like a lot of people, he had applications scattered everywhere and no good way to keep track of who had rejected him, who had gone quiet, and who actually wanted to talk.

So we built him something. We called it Job-ish.

Somehow, other people started using it too.

We added a job board in 2024, and by January 2025 Job-ish had listed more than 10 million jobs.

But the job market was changing underneath us.

Job-ish was built around helping people apply to more jobs, faster. We even used AI to write cover letters. As generative AI got better, though, it became harder to ignore the bigger question: what happens when the same technology helping you apply for a job can also do a meaningful part of that job?

Eventually, we decided Job-ish wasn't the thing we wanted to keep building. We shut it down in 2025.

Hughie is our attempt at something different.

Instead of starting with how do we help people apply to more jobs?, we started with which jobs are likely to remain mostly human work?

The International Labour Organization published an index in 2025 measuring how exposed different occupations are to generative AI. Every job on Hughie includes that occupation's exposure rating, so you can factor it into your search if you want to.

And if you want more help, there's Hughie Plus. It finds jobs that fit your background, suggests changes to your resume for each one, and can fill out applications on supported employer sites.

We're self-funded. No investors, no venture capital.

Also, Hughie is my dog.

He's a very good dog.

Hughie opens soon. Join the waitlist and we'll email you when it's ready. And if you want to tell me about your own job search, you can reach me at [email protected].
